The F2P Experiment:
Overview: This experiment is going to review the realistic viability of trying to be a top arena competitive player on a 100% free to play no money invested budget. It will accomplish this via an ongoing journal of events as a F2P player, trying to maximize my competitive potential on the server.
Note: I am, as of this initial writing, just approaching Level 50 myself on my original server. the highest level and arena ranked player on my original server and have maintained a top 5 arena placement since server start, often top 2 or 1. A NEW SERVER: 351 Sandstorm on iPhone, April 12th, 2017
So. It is now currently 17:00 PDT as I join the server. It is the first server in the server realm. Checking the event log the “New Server Purchase Bonus” is listed currently as “Ends in 3 days”
Currently the leaderboard lists the highest rated Arena player as a player named “Doctor” who’s currently at level 23. His gold border let’s me know he’s NOT a F2P player. Which is fine.
DAY 1:
The deals are on!
First I see a “New server purchase bonus” event. Heroes are Taurus, Gizmo, and for the whopping $100 Jasmine! Looks enticing for sure, but ah ah ah.. Cannot touch. Realistically, the Taurus would be a big help to start out.
Also there is a “Diamond Spender” event Offering Zem & Cara as options. My goal is to attempt to earn enough diamonds in arena somehow to afford a few stars in Zem within the next three days. The key is to figure out how to do this…
And there is still 17 days left on the current “Instant Hero” event.
Finally the “Starting out Strong” bonus for hitting level 30 in three days, and 35 in seven days. Are some of my first goals to accomplish.
I am currently halfway through the month and Goblin Squad is available. Realistically, I likely would have been a bit better off had I started on the first day of a month, so as to maximize the soulstones I could receive from it. Also, I am starting a bit late in the day on this server, which puts me a bit behind for arena.
BUT, let’s see how I do!
Current initial heroes are the standard starters…
Initially, I expect I’ll need to work with Gale quite a bit. Ember doesn’t really bring anything but damage, I’d prefer to not be newbie baited into leveling her if I can help it. Also, I am hoping to unlock enough diamonds to get Zem with the diamond spender event, which would replace any need for Elric. The question is if I can unlock enough diamonds without initially investing some resources into Elric to get them.

| Thinking… I have decided I will try and get as far as I possibly can first without leveling any abilities up on my heroes. The exception is Gale. I want to see which all heroes I end up with before I start investing to much into any of them, however, I expect I’ll likely be using Gale for awhile as a F2P player. And I don’t want to waste my ability leveling recharge time initially. My goal is to get Zem through won arena diamonds to replace Elric initially. |
Just picked up Drago and Flora, I actually forgot they gave Drago to us as a starting hero:
Drago may be an alternative tank option to Elric before acquiring Zem. He could find a place for me in a Physical focused team with his physical armor debuff and aoe stun.
As for Flora, I have no doubt I’ll need to be leveling her up, if for nothing else then Crucible later, but likely needed in Campaign as well.
I used some of my initial xp vials to bring Gale to level 8 and Flora to lvl 7 for now. I’ve also equipped Gale and Flora with any gear I have acquired so far. After a few more levels, I’ve fused Gale to Green.
At party Level 6, I gained the ability to Level abilities (which I quickly maxed Gale out and started on Flora) as well as unlocked Mariana:
This champ is not a great option due to long ultimate channel that can easily be interrupted.
At level 10 you Acquire Leon, also heroic campaign, and arena finally opens up!!
His kit seems interesting. The ally shield and lowest target heal, almost makes him a front line support style champ. However, I have serious concerns over his low health pool and lack of enemy damage or cc. Think Elric is likely the better option. Might be useful as a counter against a team that focused on diving your back line heroes rather than attacking the front line however.
At this point I fused Flora and Gale both to Green +1
| Thinking … Okay.. I’ve now reached a decision point. I have been unable to progress further with only having kept Gale and Flora leveled and equipped. I’ve been stalled at Just past the first large stage in Chapter 3. I have a few options. I could try a run at an arena battle for some diamonds. I currently have 400 diamonds. I need 100 more diamonds (and something reasonable to spend them on) to unlock the first 1 star of Zem which I could use as a tank and level after that. Another option is I could try leveling up Drago perhaps, or Mortus. I was leaning towards Mortus, as I felt the large single target ult damage may be useful. However, unsure if that will work out. I think I’ll take one of my daily uses at arena and see how I do for diamonds. |
Well, after fusing flora to blue and doing what I could with just Gale and Flora. I challenged the highest ranked player out of the three showing. I won! Which is nice. And rose from initial rank of 10,209 to 4,621 gaining 212 new diamonds. Unfortunately, I am out of gold..
Used the Midas touch once (Also completing the daily as a result) Now going to go back to take care of the heroic daily quest.
| Thinking.. Not sure if I want to spend my diamonds yet.. I am thinking it may be best to purchase a single 10x diamond chest, to unlock the Zem and allow more progress through arena. Or.. Should I just look to be patient and use them on stamina purchases to get the Zem. My concern is as a F2P player, I can only purchase stamina twice a day for 50 each. So in the three days I have for the diamond spender event, that wouldn’t be enough diamonds spent, with the single midas touch each day to unlock Zem. I think his early worth is important enough for my success to seriously consider a buy 10x diamond chests, if I can find a way through arena to get the gems I need. |
So, my attempt at a second arena battle didn’t end in success. This is strongly leading me to consider using equipment on another hero.
I am currently gated by gold now. I am considering trying a few “easier” arena opponents in order to get the 50k gold from the day 1 beginners quest of winning three games in arena.
Okay, so third attempt at arena resulted in a loss as well. I am in a bit of a tight spot at this point. I think I am going to try leveling up Drago as an off tank with a debuff ability to help my Gale increase her own dmg output. Zem can still be my primary tank once I get him, but having two tanks is something I’ll need anyways. And I really need at least one right now.
Well the Drago, helped me unlock lvl 14 and bountiful caverns!
So in an extremely close fought battle, I was able to gain another 1449 ranks, securing 115 more diamonds and rank 3,172 for the cause. I am once again out of gold funds at this point. But one more arena win should secure me another 50,000 gold. If I can get the win…
Well, I think I tried for a bit too much. My 5th arena battle resulted in another loss. That’s a bit of a heavy setback and it means I highly doubt I’ll be able to acquire the diamonds I need to do a 10x diamond chest unlock in the short run.
It’s late, I need to get to bed. Currently party level 18, ranked 1,459 with three daily arena battles left. I’ve used up all available stamina, and repurchased the two allowable times. I am sitting on 941 diamonds. If I spend them all, I’ll have 30 Zem and Cara soulstones. The late start on the server means that my second daily reward is still an hour away. I think I’ll log in before server reset tomorrow morning to grab it and spend it fast. Will update this more later.

So, good and bad. I did end up staying awake long enough to get the second daily reward, which due to the extra stamina.. Is very key. I also used it up fast and reached level 19 before hitting the hay. However, when I went to get on the next morning to try and use up a few more of my arena runs, a server maintenance was happening preventing me from logging in until the day had reset.
So as of the end of Day 1 on the server. I am Party level 19, I have Elric, Drago, Mortus, Gale, and Flora leveled to 19 as well, however I have only fused or invested ability points into Drago, Gale and Flora. All three of them are blue fusion 0 and Gale is maxed on ability points, drago about half way and only 4-5 in Flora. I managed to reach rank 967 before going to bed, meaning I am sitting on 1,111 diamonds. Interesting number 🙂
I also was accepted into an initial guild named “Hype][rion” 10001 That being said.. I seem to be the highest member in the guild, which means it’s NOT likely to be either an active or a top guild. I’ll likely make as much progress today as I can and look to switch to a stronger guild. I would create my own, but spending the 500 diamonds is not efficient 🙂
I was planning on streamlining down the day’s events to just the more important details, however, let me know if you prefer it to stay the way it is. I’ll consider the edit later tonight.
DAY 2:
Started off early, don’t have a lot of time before work so just trying to rush through the dailies I have access to as quickly as I can for more xp, then level my heroes and see if I can make some more arena headway before everyone else catches up. It’s right now about 20 minutes after the server day reset. It’s important to get a solid start at the beginning of a day reset to keep ahead of the pack (or in my case see if I can climb towards the lead before others who haven’t gotten on yet)
A few dailies completed, now rank 21. Still more to go. Once again, out of gold to level abilities with.. 🙁
Just took a go at arena, won, new rank is 437 with a diamond reward of another 390!
I only need 1k for a two star Zem, however, at 3k diamonds spent (wasted?) I get more soulstones. That would reach 3 stars I believe. Which would be a giant help. Let’s see how this might math out…

10x Diamond chest: 2590
2 days left of 2x 50 stam purchase: 200
1 day left midas touch once: 10 (already did todays at this point)
= 2920
So.. I need to figure out an efficient way the most efficient way to spend 80 diamonds.
Options..
-buy a single diamond chest = 288
-spend on midas touch = 80
-buy some item from trader = ?
The second problem.. I need to secure another 1510 diamonds before end of day tomorrow.. 🙁
Lol, just ran out of sweep tickets! Never had this happen before!
Just reached lvl 22, trying to acquire a new item for Drago before doing another arena run… Make that level 23 now.. Dang these go fast. The issue is, I doubt I have time before work to use up the stamina without sweeps available..
DANG. Just tried another arena battle. Things going so well until enemy Mortus ulted and killed my Gale 🙁 I would have jumped to the 100’s if not for that. Well, try again in 9 minutes I guess.
So.. I’ve decided at this point it’s too vital for me to win as many diamonds as possible before others catch up for the day in arena. Soon my level advantage won’t mean much if I have weak heroes. So I am going to fuse elric and mortus to blue and try arena again.
Wow.. Lvl 25 is a big level for gold! You get a bunch of fuse hero quests that if you’re playing like I have been, are already completed!
Reached lvl 26, put full team to initial blue fusion, ranked up with what ability points I have available on Gale, and just acquired a new arena rank of 211 along with another 451 diamonds. New diamond total : 1,962
Diamonds still needed for 3* Zem & 2*Cara = 868
*note, if you’ve been tracking, you may notice my current diamond totals are not matching earlier ones with my arena winnings. I’ve been receiving small amounts of diamonds from quests being completed as I go.
At this point, most of my opponents are still level 15, having not logged in likely yet today.
However, I have once again burned through my available gold reserve..
Just took a run at the rank 77 on the ladder. Obvious money spender. His lineup was Malrath, Tashi, Zem, Nylia, and Jasmine. He was lvl 19, I was hoping my level advantage may help me out and things were not looking to terrible until the Malrath ulted before anyone on my team. Then it was over.
I am no longer up against non fused heroes. I do have a solid level lead still on my opponents but that’s about my only advantage and that won’t last long. I suppose I could spend diamonds on midas touch and ability points to get my heroes abilities leveled up which would likely make the difference, but would rather not waste diamonds in that fashion. And the gold return is really bad for midas touch.
Found an easier opponent and jumped to rank 120, gaining another 431 diamonds!
Currently, I still need 377 more diamonds for the 3k I’d like to spend. Now if I could just find another source of gold to level abilities with…
| Thinking… I am starting to wonder if mortus was the correct choice for fusing up. I maybe should have used my Goblin Squad, which I received during the daily login for the month, as he’s at least 2 stars right now, and I know he will likely reach 3 stars, or more, before month is finished. I haven’t put any ability points into mortus, just gear currently. I could consider fusing and leveling up Goblin Squad as well still. Hmmm.. |
Just reached lvl 27 which the core stats should help with my arena chances. Decided to level up goblin squad and use him over Flora, she’s not doing anything for me in arena right now.
Tried a run on 58. With Goblin Squad. Lost.. he was only party level 16 as well, but had jasmine, zem, Driller, Alice, and Elric.
I will note however that Goblin Squad put out some nice damage during the fight at least. Even without any ability levels. Think swapping to him was likely the correct choice.
Apparently, level advantage is not as big as I initially thought. Though, that’s likely because my heroes are not leveled up on their abilities. I would need to spend gold, I just don’t have, to get their abilities leveled up. Along with likely purchasing ability points.
Well, I have 4 arena attempts left right now. Going to head to work. See what I can manage with them, hopefully I can secure the last 377 diamonds I need and see where that takes me.
… a number of hours later..
Currently I have 1 arena attempt left. It’s about 1:30pm my time. Server arena rewards are issued at 3:00pm I am rank 104 now. And I had serious doubts about advancing that much as many of the other players in arena have shown activity. This meant I was likely about 260 or so diamonds off my goal mark. And short on gold.
However, Luck has it that the prior night’s server maintenance also came with a reward for the “inconvenience” Which was in the form of everyone getting 500k gold and 200 diamonds! This removes almost all of my problems I was having! The one thing I am now unsure of, is if it just invalidated my entire experiment…
I am going to not dwell on that and consider it somewhat of an equalization for me starting so late in the afternoon. Also, EVERYONE on the server received it. So I am not receiving any benefit that others did not receive on my server.
I decided since I now had enough diamonds, I would unlock the 10x diamond chest. It provided me cards for the following heroes:
| Selene:So, she has a few cc effects in her kit. I don’t really have any personal experience with her, and when that is the case I often consider more advanced players opinions. The trusty Soul Hunters Viability List has this to say..“Simply does not excel at anything, not even post-awakening. Better focus on someone else” As a F2P player on this server, I think I don’t have the spare resources to attempt to prove them wrong, so will trust the advice. | |
| Sumiko:Support champ that buffs allies damage and has an ultimate that “lifts” enemies. However, as the buff is not specific to only physical or only magic. It could be that she randomly buffs my physical damage dealer with a magic damage buff. Not sure I want to take those kinds of odds. I can think of better options. | |
| Namtar:So this is kind of a physical single target assassin maybe? With interrupt. He later gets a buff versus magical teams. My concern is early arena, AOE is more trump over anything and this guy doesn’t seem to have the survivability needed to be diving back lines. That being said, his awakening ability looks really powerful, anyone with scaling as the fight goes on can become a bit of a monster if they survive. However. I am nowhere near that level. Not going to use him right now I don’t think. |
Now with the used diamonds I received enough soulstones to summon currently 2*’s in both Zem and Cara.
Zem is one of the strongest tanks in the game for many reasons. Cara however.. I am still considering what I want to do with her. I won’t have enough soulstones to get her to 3*’s which may have enticed me to using her over the other options I have right now. And, her kit is focused on single target. But there are a lot more heroes showing up well in arena that can create extra illusions or summoned units. This reduces her potential for me a fair bit.
I’ve decided at this point to just level up and fuse up Zem. I’ve also leveled his abilities as far as I had points for. I am considering the following lineup for my final arena fight…
Elric, Drago, Zem, Gale, Goblin Squad.. The main reason I am considering this lineup, is not because I believe it’s the “Best” lineup, or even the best of what I potentially have. But, based on who I have leveled, I think it may be the most successful for me right now. Elric has no ability points, but Drago, Zem, Gale, and Goblin Squad all do. Gale is maxed out on her abilities actually. So the more health I can put in front of her, I think the better. Also, Drago still has a fairly low health pool as he’s only a 1* hero right now. That will change as more soulstones come from campaign and other places.
The longer I can keep Zem in the fight till he reaches ult, his AOE will start to hopefully do work for me. Elric is basically the early game meat shield to let the rest of them get some more damage out.
That’s my thinking anyways.. Time I think to see how it actually turns out.
Okay, after a few refreshes, I see a opponent rank 75 currently who’s party level 20. They have a 3* Zem, 3* Kaneq, 2* Ember, 3* Alastair, and 1* Gale. All at blue fusion and level 20’s. I expect it’s likely my best shot maybe for my final go in the day.
WIN!!
Nice. His Zem hit ult first killing off my Drago. That made me fairly nervous, and then his Alastair I believe turned Elric into a rubber duck??? But finally my Zem ulted and killed off his Zem (Kaneq having died to damage shortly before) It came down finally to my Gale and Goblin Squad vrs his Alastair and Gale. The goblin squad ult did work and finished it even before my Gale could ult.
This puts me to rank 75 with another 304 Diamond reward. Enough to secure my Zem up to 3*!
Most damage dealt from my team was Goblin Squad with 5.2k, then Zem 4.3k, Gale 2.2k, Drago 1.2k who died first still doing more dmg then Elric .7k. However, in fairness to Elric, he’s got no ability points right now.
| Thinking… I am a bit concerned with the damage output I am seeing from Gale. She has all of her abilities maxed right now, which is about twice what anyone else on the team currently has. She also survived the entire fight and still hadn’t gotten her ultimate off. I am wondering if I may need to consider a swap out of that champ for someone else. But who. I think I am going to just focus ability points into Zem, then Goblin Squad for the time being and hold on investing more into Gale until I make a decision on this. |
Just a note now that my arena run for the day is over. As of this time: 11:15PDT server time, The top arena player is Party Level 33. I have completed all my dailies, though I do still have 122 stamina to use up, plus whatever generates before I go to bed. So, I may at best make level 28 myself (currently lvl 27) I am already falling behind in levels, due to only being able to buy Stamina twice a day. I also need to hunt for the diamonds to do so. And though rank 75 isn’t terrible, I wouldn’t call it “competitive” arena ranking.
As it stands now, I see myself only falling further behind the pack as a F2P player on this server, and luck with the diamond 10x chests didn’t provide me any key heroes to help me out of that in my opinion.
Other than using up the remaining stamina, there is not much else to accomplish for me today. I’ll be focusing on items to get my arena team to B+1 and advancing campaign. I’ll update when my arena reward depending on where I end up.
Quick update.. I ended the arena rewards reset at rank 75, earning another 100 diamonds and some gold and arena coins (a bit over 500) I feel I could have had a better result had I been on the server and had time to level in the first few hours of the server starting, but.. I am comfortable that I can at least now unlock 3* Zem with the diamonds I have.
I also managed to reach Party Level 28.
Ran out of gold again… Really. This game.
DAY 3:
Welp, Hello all you wonderful people again! We have reached day three! Let’s see.. Server time right now is 5:08:and 36 seconds 🙂
Interestingly, you may have noticed on Day 2 that I was able to let everyone know what my ending arena rank was. I hadn’t realized until after I switched back to my primary account on a different server that this was unusual, as there is a “Blind Arena” event that started up yesterday morning. For some reason it hadn’t affected my account.
However, I received a bunch of chests as a “payment” today for the error. Let me see. Appears to be 9 chests in total. Now, I’d need to go back and look, but I thought we earned 3 chests per win. I thought I won more than three times in arena yesterday. Maybe someone else can go check that for me.
Irregardless of that, the problem still does not seem to be fixed on this account, as I can still see everyone’s rank, name, etc in arena.. I am right now ranked 190, so looks like I got bumped down a bunch yesterday. Yes, a player named Valquiria took me down 4 ranks, then another named Puya, took me down 111. Dang you Puya!!!
That being said, it’s actually not terrible. It means I’ll have an easier time getting some wins for the chests from the event for the first few arena attempts today.

Now, onto the day’s work 🙂 My goal today is to complete the dailies as fast as I can and level up as quickly early as I am able to. Then I can try and make as much headway in arena as possible before the rest of the pack is leveled up to match me. Yesterday I ended with a rank of 75. I’d like to see if I can manage to at least reach around lvl 50 today if possible.
Looking at the events on my server… I don’t see the easter events (Goblin trader, blind arena). That’s weird. I do see a “Campaign Double Drops” event however. Apparently loot drops double for the next 3 days in normal campaign only. That should be useful for me. Sadly, coins and exp are not doubled. I really need gold…
Used Midas touch once, and the single daily from that pushed me to party level 29! I guess I was pretty close. I should be able to hit party level 30 before I start arena runs.
That will also unlock Crucible of Fire for me, which is really helpful for the Gold that will allow!
Bountiful Caverns today is the Exp reward, not gold. Shame.
| Thinking… You know. I realized an interesting thing last night after finishing this and logging into my other account to complete the daily activity for it. I am actually finding this account a bit more interesting to play then the other. On my other account I am the highest level player on that server and I think for at least 2 days in a row have been Rank 1 in arena. Pretty much top 3 everyday since almost server start. I think I enjoy the challenge of being the underdog. Hmm, maybe the phrase “Money does not bring happiness” applies to choosing to not be a F2P player as well. |
Well… Ran into a “thing” Dojo today is “Ride of the Valkyries” Let’s see…
I have the following female heroes:
Flora, Gale, Ember, Selene, Sumiko, Mariana, Cara.. Unfortunately only Flora and Gale have any levels… Well, ember is level 12 from when I did the first few campaigns. I am going to try an attempt with what I have, likely putting in Cara and Mariana maybe. Hmm.. Or should I put in Selene. Anyways, will try it out, see if I can make it without leveling them right now.
Nope. Not going to work without spending some exp pots on leveling them. Darn. My issue is I have no female tank really to use. I don’t even have a female front liner in fact.
Well.. It seems Cara, based on the “Soul Hunters Viability List” is the best option as someone else to invest some points into which could potentially do something for me in the future. Let’s try putting some exp into her and see where that takes us.

Just doing some campaign battles to get gear to bring Cara up to Blue. The double items is quite useful!

Barely managed to do it. I had to take it off “Auto Battle” in order to have it be successful and time when certain abilities were used or to try and hold them to the final stage. Now I need to do the same thing 4 more times.. 🙁
Cara actually is rather useful. Why is it every other champ I’ve tried seems to be better than Gale at early levels? Gale has FULL or almost full abilities, yet Cara is doing more work for me then Gale is??? With no points.
Alright, it may be a perception thing. Details show Gale with 9k dmg and Cara with about 5k. However, that’s because in an unusual situation Gale got two ults off in stage 3. Let’s see if it works out that way again.
Nope. Gale is still okay. This battle she only got off a single. With 7.8k total and Cara at 5.8k. That being said, I expect Cara would be doing more damage if she had full ability points in her.
Reached party level 30. Decided to not do the final dojo run as I had tried it twice in a row unsuccessfully. I’ll come back to it later. I only needed 3 for now to get the daily anyways. Crucible just unlocked!
But I am not convinced my team is strong enough to get far right now. I need to weigh my options on that. I think I may do the first stage right now and then return near the end of the day when I’ve added more ability points.
Hitting level 30 also awarded me 100 diamonds, 3 Elektro Magnets and 2exp vials for the first part of the “starting strong” quest.
That’s helpful right now as a second ago I was trying to do the most basic enchantment to an item on my Zem, and couldn’t afford it.. 🙁 I need to find myself a tin can and sit on the corner entrance to the arena begging for coins I think…

I’ve decided actually, before enchanting Zem’s items, I am going to try and farm up the last two items I need for him to fuse to Blue +1. That should help me in arena as well later (and crucible)
Reached level 31! Bit earlier than expected. I still have some more dailies left to use up. Though I did already do my first stamina purchase. I am not sure but it’s possible I may reach lvl 32 by end of the day! Why the picture? Not that important of a level you say? Your right! But the page looked boring, wanted some colour! (NO, I did not spell Colour wrong, I am Canadian)
Right now I am trying to unlock a few more heroics and complete the daily at the same time.
Going to start Crucible. Planning on just the first stage right now. I’ll update later tonight with my crucible run and my decisions for each stage and results as this is going to be my first try with this account. If you’re looking for idea’s yourself on how to run crucible successfully. I wrote up a section on how I complete it every time with my other account. You can find it in the “Soul Hunters: A Newbies guide to the first week”
For now, My first stage is against a player named Lucasp. Looks like the party is Ember lvl 14, Mortus, lvl 12, Drago lvl 11, Mariana lvl 4, and Flora lvl 3. Ember is Green +1, the rest are green except for flora who has no fusion. This should be simple.
I’ll be using Goblin Squad, Flora, Gale, Mortus, and Elric for this initial battle mostly to charge them up for key ults or my weakest front liners. “Auto battle” is off.
So that was as simple as I expected.
I am soon going to have to start arena. However, my goblin squad and Gale are both one item off blue +1 fusion. Think I’ll try to farm out those before I do arena.
Shockingly, I just hit level 32! I didn’t think it would be that fast. Nice. This doesn’t really do anything special for me but may help in arena and certainly in crucible.
I think I may use the information I learn from this experiment to update my other guide with more accurate detail. hmm.
Oh my … I just realized! Today is the last day of the diamond spender event. And I have enough diamonds to unlock a third star with Zem! I almost went into arena without a 3* Zem.. What am I thinking!
Okay so. Here is the math.

So, I need to still spend 130
K, that math is not actually displayed correctly, but you get the idea.
I have one more 50 diamond stamina purchase today. So let’s do that. Otherwise I need to now figure out where my 80 diamonds will go.

I am thinking the Midas touch is likely my best option for spending them. I could really use gold, and nothing else makes sense right now.
Decided Midas touch was the most efficient option I had available.
FIrst use:
20 Diamonds = 24,128 Gold

And… Unfortunately now it jumped to 40 Gold a purchase. Okay, so I should have planned this out and done one purchase yesterday to be as efficient as possible. As a result, I will be wasting 20 Diamonds unnecessarily. Lesson learned.

That was also actually the last use of Midas Touch I was allowed to do today without going VIP.
Aaaannddd.. Between the promotion and a couple more ability points invested into Zem, the gold is all gone.. 🙁

I see an opponent named Dynia. He/She is party level 29 currently, Ranked 76. Has Elric 2* Blue, Zem 2* B+1, Ember 2* B, Gale 2* B, and Marianna 2* B. hmm.. Should I consider farming my Gale to 2*’s first?
Naw, I’ll consider that after. Though it’s likely a smart idea to be honest. The quests provide them for me if I need. Let’s see if my Zem can take this. Here’s my lineup:
I was a bit impressed with Cara’s damage output. Now that Zem is stronger, I think I can afford to drop Elric for some more damage. So, let’s see how this might work out. Gale is 1 star, so is Drago (he likely won’t last long).

I think I will start some of the quests to get Gale to 2*’s before I take on another opponent. That was a bit of a challenge that fight. Both tanks went down, which means the rest of the fight could have nearly gone either way on me.
Lol, Dynia just hit level 30 (the opponent I just beat, actually, checking the replay, he was party level 30 when I attacked him but he hadn’t leveled up his team yet. And I now notice his Elric was lvl 27 and Marianna lvl 28 the rest lvl 29 when I fought him.)

I decided to try to get Gale to two stars as I would earn some equipment along the way that could also be helpful.
Whelp Good news, and bad.
I was working on 2* Gale, but ran out of stamina. Good news is, the second daily stamina popped up and gave me another 120 stamina. So I was able to finish the soulstones I needed.
Bad news is, I don’t have 35k to promote her…
So, I decided to work on items for drago blue +1, however, I am not actually sure if I am going to run him… On another note. I can get more funds by doing crucible now. Which I think it’s the right time as I may also get some more items I need as well.
So it’s CRUCIBLE TIME!!
Let’s review my lineup I have available!
I fused Drago to Blue +1 before starting, as I’ll likely need the extra tank to help me get further. A key factor in how well this works is going to rely on Flora. Also, I brought everyone in this lineup up to the lvl 32 current max I had available. I could choose to invest levels into a few of my other heroes, but I don’t think that’s worth it. I could also consider hiring a hero from a guild member to help me complete this. Hiring a Jasmine might just be worth it. I am going to hold off for now though and see how things are looking first. If a fight turns terrible, I can stop it before it ends and consider other options.
The first goal is to charge up Flora, Gale, Goblin Squad, and Mortus’s ults for the help they can provide later.
Stage 2 opponent, Kiko with party level 11, highest hero level is 15 or lower. Should be fairly simple. Keeping auto battle off again. Using Drago, Mortus, Flora, Gale, and Goblin Squad. Ended up charging up everyone’s ults other than Drago who’s just a bit off full. Very slight damage on Drago and Mortus. Maybe 8% of health.
Stage 3 opponent, Blzmystery PL 15, mostly green +1 fusions, all but one is max level for him.
I am going to run the three tanks, Cara, who hasn’t yet charged, and Gale. I don’t want to take any damage here, I might use Gale’s ultimate quick once just to clear through the stage without damage. The energy bonuses from kills should hopefully recharge it.
Well, I won, obviously, Drago is the only one still with damage on him, about 10% I’d say. Did use Gale’s ult about half way through the fight. I wanted to be sure to kill them before there Ember ulted me back. Didn’t recharge my Gale ult as I had hoped however. Only about a quarter way.
This does give me enough gold to promote Gale, which I will do now. Unfortunately, I have to leave shortly. So with Gale now at 2*’s I am going to take another run at arena. I don’t think I have enough stamina (43) to get Cara to Blue +1 or anyone else an extra fusion either. I likely will not have a stronger team than right now to go into arena with for the day, and the longer I wait the more others have time to level up.
Arena again:
Okay, I found a player I want to take a run at in arena. He’s party level 30. Cannot pronounce his oriental name, He has a 3* Prince of Persia, 3* Ezio, 2* Killjoy, 2* Cara, and 3* Slim. I think with my heavier tank champs and Zem, along with Goblin Squad who helps vrs divers like his team, I may do alright. Let’s see.
His PoP dies early.. Zem ults at half health still, My Drago goes down, gut fight is looking good!
And I win!!! Once again, lost the front two tanks but I jumped to rank 42 on the ladder! Securing another 625 Diamonds as a result!

I think the main failure of his team design is he had no actual tank heroes on his team. So no one could handle the aoe damage Zem put out, and they died before they got their own damage ults off.

So update. I am back from my afternoon plans. I wasn’t able to do another arena run prior to the mid day reward time. I unfortunately was also bumped back down to rank 111. I received 90 diamonds and some gold. I attempted to do a few arena runs to regain some lost rank, but was unsuccessful.
I am concerned as a result that many of the arena opponents are now surpassing me in party level. With only two resets a day on stamina, I am unable to keep up in party level with the rest of them. This holds me back a bit, as I was now looking to try to drive for a lower rank to get more diamonds to allow a second three star diamond spender purchase for the future to help flesh out my team a bit more.
Now, I am not saying I am giving up yet. I just think I may have run the course on any early benefits I may have been able to achieve in arena.. It will likely now take “the long haul” to get further.

I noticed about two hours ago that a new server had started up. I decided to do a little side experiment to go along with this one and started up a F2P account on that server. My goal is to see if, because I started within an hour of server start, I could get enough of a really early lead to jump further up the ladder the first day. I don’t really plan to likely continue with the side experiment unless it seems like a more hopeful competitive option then the current account I am running. The main focus of this experiment is to determine the best option for F2P players to start out.
What I attempted on that server is to actually level up the starting heroes as fast as possible to try and hit the arena with as strong a team as is available as early as is available. I wasted a bit in the process unfortunately, but have now landed currently on the following lineup on that server:
I forced a lot of ability points into Ember initially, but have now started trying a strategy of leveling up the second abilities first rather than the ults.
The thinking on this is that, though the ults can be team fight changing. Your fairly guaranteed to have each hero at least activate a secondary ability during every team fight, and often multiples of them. The ults are less guaranteed.
Also, so as not to burn through my gold quite as fast, I have been spreading my ability points over multiple champions as the earlier points are less expensive than the later points yet both provide the same bonus per level.
Another point I have learned in the process of doing this little side jaunt.. I’ve realized, and had I thought earlier about it I likely would have noticed, but had not until now, But everyone always starts at rank 10k or something to start arena. All the enemies appear to be a set level, So if they are party level 14, all heroes in the party are lvl 14 as well. And though they appear to have silver (unfused) borders, once you reach the details at the end of the fight, they all show a single green fusion on the borders. Also, the champion pool, though general the basic champions is much more diverse than a standard player would ever have access to in that short a period of time likely.
So, all of this lead me to understand that most of the initial players you’re fighting against in arena are actually bots… Not real players. A real player would not end up with every champion at exactly the same level, until they are in like the party level 20’s or so. Also, your initial party levels allow you to have hero levels beyond your party level. So why stop at party level if you’re an arena player. And what are the odds that every hero is the exact same fusion level? Basically, they are bots. Judging from how effective they are, even at lower fusions and hero levels then my own heroes, I also believe they start with at least some ability points in their heroes, if not maxed out.
Just some information to consider.

So I have gone back to the original account to finish off the night’s items. Mainly that was finishing the crucible run. It was a serious challenge. Well, near the end at least. Most of it I was able to clear simply by keeping auto battle off and then activating the ult for my Zem whenever the fight started. His heal and aoe damage does wonders. About level 10 or so, I allowed them all to use ults. I kept Gale benched, I think in hindsight, I should have benched Goblin Squad. His ult does a LOT of damage actually. I made it to Stage 15, with Zem, Drago, Gale, Flora, Cara all alive. However, Zem was pretty low health, Drago around half and the rest a bit hurt as well.
I decided to hire a hero to help me finish. I ended up hiring a level 28 Malrath:
What I can tell you, is that he did not tank nearly as well as I hoped. I kept flora off the team, she was over half dead and she wasn’t going to survive long enough to reach her ult anyways. Without that, she’s useless. Also the ult isn’t really leveled as I’ve been focusing on upping the abilities of my arena team instead.
I had to run, and then stop before finishing and rerun it a bunch of times getting close a couple of them until I finally succeeded and beat level 15.
I ended up with a sweet prize..:
Tholin! Now Tholin is not quite the super hero in arena. But he does do a bunch for me in other area’s of the game. And to be honest, I think he’s about as good a second front tank as either Elric, or Drago, or Leon. I think I’ll likely look to level and fuse him up tomorrow to use him.
Before I head to bed for the night, I am going to quickly use up my stamina and run one more arena fight.
Well. That’s disappointing. I literally ran out of stamina short a single bloody axe shy of putting Tholin to Blue +1 fusion.
Ah well. I decided to level him now, simply so I could more efficiently use my points up on farming the gear he might need.
Okay, I found an arena opponent. This guy is a level 33. He’s rank 39, which is a serious challenge for me. I think I topped out at rank 45 before. So if I win this I should get a bit more diamond from it. His party is the following: Malrath, Ethera, Nylia, Serafine, and Radulf. All of them are blue +1 fusion. I am kind of hoping his Malrath won’t be enough tank for his team and I can clear out his backline afterwards fast enough to possibly win.
I could be wrong however.. He does have a significant amount of AOE dmg on that lineup. I am not really sure what Ethera does, haven’t run into her before.

| Thinking… Now that I’ve had a few different instances of success in arena. First, I am not quite as discouraged about my potential success I previously was. Second. I believe post level around 35, you have to have Zem, or two other tanks to have any reliable success in arena I feel. And even with Zem, I still feel more comfortable with a second tank. Also, Goblin Squad seems better than I initially gave him credit for earlier. Lots of passive unnoticed damage. Mainly good against enemies trying to get into your back line. |

My only hope is that with 3 divers, my Goblin Squad does some serious work for me and Zem aoe damage hurts them as well. I expect his taurus to really ruin my fun, especially if the ult goes off. Let’s see. Will be a good experiment for Goblin Squad.

Alrighty then.. Time to focus?
It’s about an hour before the arena rewards will be issued for the day. I popped on quickly before I left for work and used up my ability points that I had. Going to use up more now. Down to 134k gold. Well a bit more after Midas touch.
First up after that will be to get my dailies completed and my team leveled in the next hour. If I have time, I’d also like to take Cara up to B+1 fusion I think.
First up is the bountiful harvests, It’s gold again today. Just a note, i’ve been deciding to try investing my ability points into my second and third abilities as they get used more often than the ult which may not go off. Also, to maximize benefit from gold, I am getting them up to a point that the cost is starting to get to high and then swapping to leveling a different champ. So I am not stuck with ability points I cannot use because I ran out of gold first.
Dojo today is “Guys only” I am using Goblin Squad, Mortus, Tholin, Zem, and Elric. But even though normal is available, I don’t have enough strength to beat it (tried) so I am doing easy still for the time being.
Just hit level 34!
Dang.. farming equipment without sweep tickets is annoying.

So, I tried to take on a team with a Riley, Gus, Kong, Lumos (all 2*’s) and Nilya (3*)
I was hoping the riley and gus might go down faster, but they didn’t and the kong illusions did serious damage, along with Lumos buff to him. I got wrecked. But, had I won, I would have ended up rank 31, which would have been nice.
K, so ending rank was 98. This got me 100 diamonds, 515 arena coins, and 27.5k gold.
Also, I hit level 35 earning me the second “Starting Strong” reward. 250 diamonds and 20 gale soulstones along with some gold items.
K, Let’s try this fight.. Bagpipe Party level 31, Running Elric, Taurus, Jasmine, Arcturus, Sagar, all of them 3* and B+1.

Whelp, it’s beautiful outside. I’ll come back to this a bit later tonight and see if I can make more headway.
I was doing well till the Taurus ult hit me and obliterated most of my team in one shot.
DAY 5:
Also known as… Easter!
Anyways, just a quick update to day 4. I completed the 15 stages of crucible again, this time I didn’t need to hire a hero. Basically, the best approach as I see it (and which has been working for me) Is early stages charge up everyone’s ults, then start using the zem ult to hold off enemies while trying to get the rest of your ults charged up. Once things become a bit more difficult, you need to use zem ult and one other big ult to help clear the field faster for a few more levels.
Then switch to your less essential heros keeping the heroes you know you’ll need for the final two stages in reserve.
Keep going like that until you reach a point that you’re losing too many heroes in a single fight and stop the fight before it ends. At this point you need to swap in your “A” team again. This will hopefully take you to the end of stage 13. At around stage 13 you have to try your best to keep a big ult back. I have been trying to keep back my goblin’s as the ult from them is devastating but takes a long time to charge up.
At this point you need to put in Goblin squad and use his ult near the beginning of the fight to clear stage 14 as best as possible, while also letting the rest of the team open up.
Once you get to final stage, send in whatever other heroes you have other then your “a” team. Yesterday I only had 4 heroes left outside of my “A” team, so I sent the 4 of them in alone. Yes, even undermanned, and without a tank actually. All I needed from them was to soften up the enemy team a bit for the remaining main squad to take a hero or two out early enough to tilt the fight in my favor.
Okay, another update. I have now reached level 37 with the party. Used up all my stamina, but I kinda screwed up. On the weekend, you get access to the full dojo, all wings. I forgot I hadn’t finished more than the initial three stages in one wing to complete the daily and used the rest of my stamina on farming equipment in campaign.
Now that’s not horrible, because I will be getting a bit more stamina from the 3 hour delay event (Daily reward) I just have to get up before server resets to use them up.
Also, there is a new diamond spender event on. Offering Lumos and Tanya. I currently have 2,610 diamonds. 3k diamonds I believe will get me a 3* lumos. Which, I expect will help me very much. My one concern is so far the diamond spender events have followed in line with my prior server I am also on. In which case, I might expect Goram to be available in another week from now approximately. I either need to plan to have enough diamonds saved for then, or figure out a way to earn them. Not sure what else will allow me to earn 3k diamonds in a week really.
Next to making significant gains in arena that is. Lumos may help with that but I am falling further and further behind in level compared to the leaders.
Oh, I also received a free diamond chest and it gave me a card for Zem, well, that turned into 18 soulstones. Doesn’t really help me much.
And, I replayed crucible for today (day 5) and completed all 15 stages. Didn’t need to hire any heroes. That being said, if it turns out like my other server, I expect crucible to become more difficult.
As a reward for finishing it, I received a card for a new hero:
The tier list labels this champion as such:
“Great second line tank, main role is killing Zem. Good survivability and party buffs make this hero a top choice in current meta.”
Now, that all being said, she’s only listed as a “B” for arena offense and a “C” for arena defense. So, I am not quite sure how that lines up with the description provided.

Physical attacker, Buffs allies attack and movement speed as well as heal and lifesteal, and Physical armor. Finally knock up, though single target.
Well, seems interesting. I could see it potentially helping Zem as well. 3* champ. Basically better than most of my other options, I’ll likely start to buff her up. I wish I had some more mid or back line heavy hitters however.
Though if I get Lumos and Tanya, that will help, plus the 10x diamond chests might provide more options. I have 3 days, I’ll think about that tomorrow.
I also have a super busy next two weeks of work before things settle out. Don’t expect many updates in the detail done up till day 3 at this point. I’ll probably start hitting on the highlights due to my schedule.
Night all! Oh. I finished rank 88 I believe in arena today. I made some attempts at lower ranks but to no success. I think Lumos will help out tomorrow, though he will only be 2 *’s at that point I think. Hmm, I’ll have to figure something out.

So woke this morning to finish up those dojo’s, as I said I was going to do and had another letter in my “mail box” checked it out and LOL, it’s a note saying some of the players didn’t receive the 500,000 gold and 200 diamonds from the prior server maintenance and so they were sending it to everyone now.
Checked and yup. They just gave me the bonus AGAIN. Good news is, I am at around 2,800 diamonds now, only 200 to go (and spend) to get the full 3k spender bonus and lumos.
I also need to figure out the best way to spend them before this clock ticks over.

So, not a great showing in arena. I am in about the busiest time at work currently for the next two weeks. In hindsight. I should have started this experiment AFTER my busy season of work ended.
Ah well. What I did do however was unlock the 10x diamond chest to start towards Lumos. This earned me a two star Lumos and Tanya. I also received two more hero cards in the process. So here’s my new list of heroes.
The other two heroes there are Baltor and Cyana

Guess, I’ll leave them on the shelf for now. Honestly, it’s a shame, because they both LOOK really cool. I like the concept of a fat gladiator type throwing metal balls at people. And Cyana seems like she puts out lots of damage if she had enough time alive. Probably, why she’s bad. In almost every game speed and lethality early trumps late more often than not. Ah well. Shame.
So, all that behind us, I am leveling Lumos up.

Well, I need to go to bed for work tomorrow. I’ll finish up crucible and be sure to use the rest of my available stamina. I need to spend 170 diamonds tomorrow to get lumos up to three stars.

Well, reviewed the strawpoll and it looks like the majority of those who voted believe Taurus is the correct choice.
I don’t disagree necessarily. I think Sylphi would be best, but don’t have the funds for her. I expect the updates will be very short this week. I honestly don’t even know if I have enough time right now to maintain the gameplay and journal. I may be forced stop for two weeks and try again I am thinking. A shame as I feel I had an alright start on the account. But, I am doing income taxes and am in the final two weeks. Basically, I am way too busy 🙁
