Getting Started

Create Your Ultimate Team And Strike Down Your Enemies!

What is Brown Dust? What should I expect?

Set out on an adventure to uncover the truth behind a revolution that tore the world asunder. On your journey, gacha recruit a vast roster of unique mercenaries with fully voiced waifu/husbando artwork and purchasable costumes.  Assemble your team and arrange your formation of mercenaries to combat your PvE and PvP foes.

Brown Dust is a Gacha game. Meaning that most units and gear will be obtained at random from spending in-game resources/currency. Rotating banners offer increased chance to roll specific units among a greater pool, while certain units can only be obtained through special means such as from rare ancient coins or mileage, which can also be used to guarantee units of your choice.

While the game is generous with ingame currency, and many events will offer free resources and units, ultimately you will be limited in what you can obtain by time, money, and most importantly, luck. There will be whales of different proportions, and they will have more than you, but the game can be very rewarding and f2p-friendly.

Watch this amazing video by Azeew on Why You Should Play Brown Dust!

What server should I play?

If you are reading this, you are most likely interested in the Global or European servers, which are great for new players! European server is also memed to be a dead server due to low population. In their last Underground Arena tournament, a sizeable number of entrees were completely inactive accounts. . .

What is rerolling and why should I do it?

Rerolling in gacha games is resetting your account until you are happy with your starting units. Because new accounts are given plentiful starting resources that can be used for a small chance to receive powerful mercenaries, many players will reset the account to ensure they start their journey on the right foot. Resetting your account is a relatively painless process in Brown Dust that takes only about 3 minutes, and it is one of the few ways players can have control over what units they use in the game. It is often recommended that beginners reroll until they get some bare minimum powerful units so that they can progress through the game at a reasonable pace without being walled due to poor luck in recruiting mercenaries.

What should I reroll for should I and how do I?

At the end of the day, it is up to you. Some players agonize over it trying to get the greediest, perhaps rarest combination of starting mercenaries, while others will find themselves content to start out with a strong unit and/or waifu/husbando.  Because everyone has different goals and perspectives, when you ask different people if you should keep or reroll a starting account, you may get varied answers.

UPDATE 9/27/19:

As of now, it’s too late for me to recommend new players to invest in what used to be staples. At this point, the only unit in the game that remains highly useful at all skill levels is Lucius, almost any unit that used to be good has been severely outclassed by new units that require extensive investment that beginners cannot afford early on through a new system called companions.

Here are the updated reroll goals:

  1. Lucius.
  2. [Current Meta Units]: Dalvi, Kaoli, Catherine.
  3. Your waifu.

Generally speaking, what most players aim for when rerolling fall into two categories:

  1. First would be the most capable, relevant, and widely usably mercenaries that will guarantee new players can progress through the game at a steady rate. The, by far, most recommended unit of this category would be Seir, who is one of the most reliable tanks in the game and can single handedly be what allows an otherwise ragtag team survive battle after battle. If you get an otherwise amazing start that does not include Seir or otherwise comparable tank, she is a high priority pick for using your mileage on.

  2. The other category units is almost like the opposite. These would be the rarest and most valuable units for endgame PvP. While they may not be helpful for the first few months after you acquire some, they are ultimately meta-defining and will confidently stand at the top of Arena tier charts. Some may be useful in PvE early on while others will be near worthless. It is important to understand that most of these units are not beginner-friendly, but are so valuable late game that experienced or hardcore players are willing to grind for months, even at sometimes slower than others, to come out on top at the end. These units include all Legends units, especially Lucius, as well as Foxy, Wilhelmina, and to a lesser extent, Venaka, Aaron, Lilian, Walya.

How should I reroll?

REEEE-rolling can depend on the day you start: in some events you get 400 diamonds on your start day which helps your rerolling massively, while other days you start with 160diamonds. Brown Dust has a built in ‘Reset’ button located under ‘Settings’ on a 3 min cooldown. There are three main methods for rerolling:

  1. FASTEST: Rerolling using the initial free stuff. Depending on ongoing events, you may get two 5* tickets and 20 premium scrolls (best for Sier banners!) to summon right when you start. This method is roughly 5min/reroll. You can consider starting if you:
    1. Get Sier + another decent 5* unit
    2. Get Sier + another ‘normal’ 5* unit
    3. Get two decent 5* units
  2. OCTOs: Rerolling using initial tickets and diamonds. Opening your initial 5* tickets, and no matter what you get, start adventure mode until you get 600/1200/1800 diamonds to purchase 1/2/3 legend scrolls which give a chance for Octos. The norm is to stop at 2-5, 2-7 or 3-1, remembering to collect diamonds from books, quests etc.  This is more time consuming, roughly 20mins to 1h+ per reroll, but you start the game with an Octo.
  3. BEST START: Same as the above OCTO method, but only start diamond collecting from adventure mode if you get Sier from your initial 5* tix/premium scroll summons. This may take many, many tries, but you start with an Octo + Sier.

New Player Basics

Top Priorities and Things to Learn as a New Player

Where should I spend my Horseshoes?

Playing Brown Dust can be a dynamic experience as you advance through the Campaign, face others in the Arena, pillage in the Mystic Island or engage the World Boss. Many battles in the game consume a stamina resource called Horseshoes that you generate over time. For the players just starting, the first priority should be to spend their Horseshoes on the campaign, earn quest completion rewards and unlock the rest of the modes.

How should I spend extra Horseshoes?

If you find yourself generating more Horseshoes than you can spend, the easiest sink is at Repeat Battle at the Rune Temple (See below). Rune temple gives rune pieces but also the most Captain Exp, which hastens your quest to lvl40 for the 1,000 Ancient coins. You can easily spend thousands of Horseshoes here.

5-10 (Hard), 25-5 (Hard), 25-10 (Hard) are also grindable repeat levels for their rates of normal scrolls, which are used to generate fodder.

What are my “dailies” I should always complete?

Brown Dust has a plentiful Daily Missions that will reward players for participating in the many modes the game has to offer. Always aim to complete these as well as your quests in main menu Events and Gift Pack. To get the most out of the game, unlock these modes from the campaign!

  1. Spend Arena swords and Novice Arena swords as much as you can. These Arena entries generate quickly overtime until 10. You can farm this mode throughout the day by using Repeat Battle, a function to let the game queue up matches for you, and is integral to your player progression by earning you Honor. Win or lose, you gain Honor so make sure you fight!
  2. Clear Crystal Cave 10 times. Everyday, players can fight in this dungeon up to 10 times to gain awakening crystals, another precious resource used in awakening mercenaries to unlock powerful new talents. While the class of crystal rotates every day, it is recommended level to always clear the 4th level as it offers the greatest amount of medium/high crystals.
  3. Defend and Pillage in the Mystic Island. Yet again Brown Dust has another unique location to grind a unique resource, integral to player progression. Deploy formation in the mystic island to earn various resources and bonus experience to generate Mystic Dust. Pillage other players up to five times a day to steal their mystic dust and use it in the trading post in exchange for powerful 5☆ Skill books.
  4. Participate in Co-Op Raids and the World Boss. Complete your daily quest by teaming up in a Co-Op Raid to earn Soul Gears, special equipment for your mercenaries, and lend a hand to take down the World Bosses, monstrous tests of your damage and wits to earn Ancient Coins, the rarest currency used to recruit Legendary mercenaries.
  5. Tackle the Guild Wars. It is highly recommended to join a guild as checking in everyday earns you horseshoes. Guild Wars are then a place to choose specific battles against enemy guilds for large prizes of honor, diamonds and other resources.
  6. Grind Rune Temple on Saturdays. Runes are the most powerful equipment mercenaries can use to become stronger. While the Rune Dungeon is always available to enter at the cost of horseshoes, it offers 50% bonus rewards on Saturdays! It is recommended to farm Rune Temple level 9 as it offers the most  4-6☆ Runes and Rune Pieces.
  7. Farm the Event Dungeon that is only open at certain times of the week, see your in game Events to find when it is open for your server. This is a good way to turn stamina into gold or slimes. Farming the 5th level in the Gold Vault is popular because you can go through gold very quickly.
  8. Enter the Underground Arena, one of Brown Dust’s toughest challenges, where all rewards go to the victor of a real time PvP  match taking turns building your formations unit by unit. Those who stand at the top rankings bring home Diamonds, Gold and Honor, while the losers are left with dirt. Players are advised to try their hand in UA after they’ve mastered the basics.

What are all these resources and currencies?

  • Gold: Earned from a heck of a lot of places. Best farmed in the event dungeon, Gold vault 5F. Mostly used to Refine Runes and to roll for Soul Gear.
  • Diamonds: The primary currency used to recruit new mercenaries. Earned commonly through quests and rewards. There is also an expansive variety of bundles and options to spend your diamonds on.  This is also where players may choose to spend real world money to earn ingame currency.
  • Ancient Coins: A rare currency used to recruit select Legendary mercenaries and purchase legendary skill books in the Honor Shop. Earned through many milestone rewards in quests and Evil Castle, and then regularly from weekly Arenas and World Boss.
  • Honor: A unique resource earned primarily from Arena and Guild Wars. These can be exchanged in the Honor Shop, and it is highly recommended to prioritize spending Honor on 5☆ skill books.
  • Mystic Dust: Another unique resource earned chiefly from Mystic Island. Spend these in the Mystic Island Trading Post for 5☆ skill books and pieces aftering unlocking them with a one-time gold cost.
  • Soul Pieces: Another unique resource earned from Co-op Raids. These can be used like gold to roll for Soul Gears from the Soul Gear Shop.
  • Awakening Crystals: A rare resource earned from the Crystal Cave. When a unit is max level, it can Rank Up. Upon the first rank up, the unit can be Awakened to unlock a new appearance and additional skill at the cost of crystals.
  • Rune Dust: By dismantling Runes (discussed later), rune dust can be obtained and then used as material used in refining runes.
  • Guild Thingies: Point earned from attacking in Guild Wars can be used in the Guild Shop, best spent on 5* Skill Book Pieces and 5* Companion Fate.

How do my mercenaries progress and grow stronger?

  • Level: Increases health, support % for supports, and attack for non-supports.
  • Rank: When increasing the ☆ Rank of a mercenary, its maximum level, and therefore maximum stat ceilings are increased. While units will start anywhere between Ranks 1☆ – 5☆, all units can be ranked up to 6☆.
  • Skill-Up: After level and rank, the most important factor in your mercenary’s strength is their Skill-Up. By consuming duplicate mercenaries or skillbooks, your mercenary’s skills will increase in strength, and they may even unlock new ones. Most units require Skill-Up of at least +3 or even up to +9 to acquire important power spikes.
  • Companion: A new system that gives up to +5 additional Skill-Up ranks. Think of Companions as permanent Skill Books that are mercenary specific, they do nothing by themselves, but give skill ups when accompanying a Mercenary.
  • Awakening: After a mercenary has been Ranked-Up once, crystals can be used to transform a unit to its awakened state, unlocking new battle costume, increased stats and an additional skill.
  • Soul Gear: Mercenaries can equip up to three unique Soul Gears that increase their stats. Equipping three level 10 Soul Gears will give the added bonus of +1 Skill-Up. This is the only way of reaching max +10 Skill-Up when a unit is at +9.
  • Runes: Powerful stat enhancers, mercenaries can equip up to two Runes. If you find your units having a hard time somewhere, consider equipping better runes!

What unit should I use with my free selection ticket?

UPDATE 9/27/19:

Hell (4* Magician) give her your best shield runes and get her to +9, use her to clear the vast majority of Campaign and Evil Castle.

Ceres, Isabel or Serendia (requires Companion)  (4* Support) don’t even need runes.

You may come across a variety of free selection tickets through events or other means. Once you receive them, use them from your permanent reward mailbox to be able to choose any recruitable mercenary of the star rarity. Be aware, fusion units like Gunther or Sabrina are not recruitable and neither are mileage-only units such as Asera or Ino.

The answer to this question can become complicated and contentious depending on who you talk to. In the abstract, you should obtain what your team most lacks, but whether  there is a specific role you’re missing or if your Hell is simply too low skill-up, is a question you must figure out on a case-by-case basis. Many players will immediately recommend to invest in spending your 4star tickets to +9 Hell, while smooth voiced, CDFH, repeatedly suggests never to spend your selection tickets on duplicate units.

What are good units for beginners?
UPDATE 9/27/19:

What should I do with duplicate mercenaries?

New players often find themselves constantly needing to expand their Mercenary inventory space. Duplicate mercenaries should be used to increase Skill-Ups until the unit is +9 with the exception of certain mercenaries used in fusion. Two +9 units of the same Rank can be combined to create a new unit of a higher rarity. This is a powerful way to earn a random 4☆ unit out of two 3☆’s or a random 5☆ out of two 4☆’s.

When combining two units of the same class, the random unit obtained will be of the same class. Combining two 3☆ Defenders will create a 4☆ Defender, and so on. Combining two units of different classes will create a unit of a random class.

It is very important to learn that a new player should avoid making the mistake of using their premium Gold star (units that start 3☆ and above) as fodder to level up or rank-up their other units, as almost all 3☆ can be useful in a niche, and the game patches and buffs weak units.

What should I fodder and what’s the best way to farm?

Between an influx of 1☆ and 2☆ silver fodders, a rainbow of slimes and a night sky of Rank-Up Stars, how should I optimize my account progression? “The golden rule: only use silver stars as fodder” -Azeew. Check out their short guide on Fodder Farming.

Once your account is up and running, you can spend your daily horse shoes leveling units on a stage that drops normal scrolls such as 25-10. Spend the normal scrolls and put your level 1 fodders into the Mystic Island to level up. Rank them up, continue leveling with slimes earned from arena and repeat forever.

How should I spend Diamonds?

UPDATE 9/27/19:
Diamonds should only be spent towards pulling for units that have the longest “shelf life” in terms of value. In Brown Dust, newly introduced units introduce powercreep, which shape the everchanging meta. To be able to win, we recommend players only focus their diamonds on the mercenaries that will have the biggest impact on improving the strength of their team, and also will remain relevant for the longest period of time.

The first unit that fits this criteria is Lucius, an extremely unique and rare unit. Due to its rarity, I cannot recommend new players who don’t intend to reroll for Lucius to start spending all of their diamonds on the tiny chance they get this unit. Instead, new players should focus on these units:

  • Dalvi
  • Kaoli / Catherine
  • Six Devil Companion (not released in Global yet)
  • Bansina (not released in Global yet)
  • Your Waifu.

The most common question for Diamond spending is whether or not one should be spending their diamonds on the Mercenary x10 banners, which offers mileage, or the weekly 600 Diamond Legend Scroll Package that offers gold. Because the Scroll Package rolls the same number of units for less Diamonds than the legendary banner, it is a more cost-effective for players solely looking for a legend mercenary, and only recommended for those who are interested in a legend unit and intend to reroll their account if they do not receive one.  If you intend to stick with your account, instead, you should opt for either the 600 Diamond Chance-Up banner or 900 Diamonds for the Legend Recruit Mercenary x10 banner. Even though it will let you roll less units in total, it will crucially earn you mileage, which you can exchange for a guaranteed 5☆ in the future.

As for other worthwhile bundles, there are periodically 5☆ Skill Book bundles that cost about 3,000 diamonds. Despite the high cost, 5☆ Skill-ups are the primary way mercenaries improve power level and are always worth it. Other options a player may consider would Dwen’s Honor Package and Awakening Crystals. If you are progressing through Evil Castle and participating in Guild Wars, you should have enough Honor income to purchase your two monthly 5☆ Skillbooks, but if you’re short, you should definitely consider Dwen’s Honor package to make sure you don’t miss out on this timegated resource. The Awakening Crystals are expensive and generally not worth it, but early when you first start off with several units you intend to Awaken, it will take some time to accrue enough crystals to awaken them. It’s an important power spike, and perhaps just the thing you need if you’re getting walled at a certain part in the Campaign or Evil Castle. Purchase at your discretion!

Finally, you should always be on the lookout for Hot Deals, a limited event shop that Elise <3 offers for at good value. For a full breakdown and more detailed explanation of Diamond spending see Azeew’s guide (that showcases Christmas Grandhildr Costume as the thumbnail, definitely a solid investment) and CDFH’s overview on resources!

What is mileage and how should I spend it?

When spending 600 Diamonds to earn Chance-up Mercenary x10 or 900 Diamonds for Legend Recruit Mercenary x10, you earn 1 Mileage per 6 Diamond spent. There are many options to choose from when spending your Mileage:

  1. 100 Mileage – Random 3☆.  with a chance to recruit Mileage only 3☆ units (Asera, Naja).
  2. 1000 Mileage – Random 4☆ with the chance to recruit rare Mileage only mercenaries (Ors, Dominique, Ino).
  3. 1000 Mileage – Recruitable 4☆ of your choice, does not include fusion/legend/mileage-only units. Up to 4 times a month.
  4. 4000 Mileage – Recruitable 5☆, does not include fusion/legend/mileage-only units. Up to 4 times a month.
  5. 4000 Mileage – Random 5☆ with a 10% chance to recruit the only Mileage-only 5☆, Edin.

UPDATE 9/27/19:

Since Companions have been introduced, players cannot max a unit to their highest skill up without obtaining 5 copies of their companion first, as skill books can only raise a unit to +9. Because of this, it is not recommended to use mileage on units that require their companions to become viable. Instead, mileage should be used on units that DO NOT REQUIRE THEIR COMPANION TO BE USEFUL. See this helpful link from Soistheman for examples:

http://soistheman.com/browndust/en/?post=useful_5_merc_at_low_skill_level

Also, Edin bad. Don’t waste your mileage for him.

For new players, it is recommended to start off aiming for 4000 Mileage to obtain a Recruitable 5☆ of your choice. Because 5☆’s are rare, and because so many of them are not widely useful in PvE or PvP, this is the new player’s first chance to guarantee a missing mercenary for their formation.

After this, or if you like to live dangerously, the options to earn Mileage only units offer you a chance to obtain some powerful allies. Gunther, for example, can only be recruited through Mercenary Fusion, requiring Mileage-only Ino. Beware, however, it is not recommended to chase these 4* mileage-only mercenaries through mileage as their expected cost is at 30,000 mileage.  New accounts will also get a free Ino through 30 Days Festival account.

And finally, at the top of the mileage chart, do you want Edin, Siegmund’s powerful brother, corrupted by the magic sword,Vanar? Considering 4000 Mileage offers 10% chance to get him, expected cost is 40,000 Mileage.

How should I spend Ancient Coins?

Ancient Coins, perhaps the rarest of currencies are used to obtain Legendary mercenaries, legendary skill books and legendary soul gear. The new player will begin to earn “ac” through one-time Campaign and Evil Castle rewards, as well as an additional 1000 ac as a reward for reaching Player Level 40. Afterwards, World Boss will be the main source of AC, giving a paltry 2 AC per day at first, and up to 10 AC for top achievers.

After clearing Evil Castle and reaching the point, the first Ancient Coin purchase players will make will be in choosing 1 of 10 available Legend Mercenaries for 1,500 ac. It’s at this point that new players should understand that there are two categories of Legend units, the Six Devils, and the eight Dominus Octos, four of which are available through ac purchase. While the Six Devils are powerful in their own right, by in large they are outclassed by the Dominus Octos that were released afterwards. It is not recommended to get one of the Six Devils for a new player’s first Legend Mercenary, even if she is Angellica, and she’s your waifu.

Of the four remaining options among the Dominus Octo, the strongest and most recommended mercenary is Velfern, the Night of Indolence, followed by Mamonir, the Night of Death. The former boasts sheer firepower, while the latter becomes an incredible tank at high skill-up.

UPDATE 9/27/19:

The Six Devils have been reworked. After getting at +9 Legend from the Jump-Start Event, spend Ancient Coins to get their Soul Gear, which gives +1 Skill Up when they are all maxed. Afterwards, AC can be spent on Legend Skill Books and the next Legend unit of your choice.

Mechanics

How the Game Plays and how to Play the Game

Can I repeat battle with my phone locked?

When you have your phone locked/sleep/off the game cannot run and repeat battles will not progress. Androids when left running can automatically go into a low power pseudo-lock state where the game can still run. Additionally you should utilize the ingame sleep function to save battery and prevent vibrating.

How is attack order determined?

Before battle, choose the order your units take their turns. Whenever a side attempts an attack, the turn is given to the opponent, then the next unit in the opponent’s turn order goes. The important key here, is to understand that neither Support turns nor a Magician charging turns counts as attacks. Therefore, if your order is Support -> Magician -> Warrior. The support will activate its ability on your Magician, then they will spend their first turn charging, and finally your warrior will attack, before allowing the opponent to take a turn. Another example, is if you have three supports, chained in a row, they will all take their turns in sequence without an opponent interrupting. The opponent gets to go only after your side has attempted to attack. Units that attempt to attack but are inoperable due to freeze or stun will give the next turn to their opponent.

The next important question is to understand which side goes first? This is based on the game mode! In Campaign, Evil Castle and Co-Op Raid, the enemy is guaranteed to attack first. In Arena, the attacking team always goes first, this is the attacker’s advantage. In Guild War and Mystic Island Pillaging, the defending team goes first.

How does a Support target its ability?

Supports target their abilities around your next turn’s unit. Some supports such as Themis or Stella are exceptions and lock their support target to themselves. You can use multiple supports in a row to chain their supports before a mercenary attacks. See this two minute breakdown of Chain Supporting by Tachibana!

How does Taunt work?

When a mercenary is buffed with Taunt, they force all incoming attacks to be targeted on themselves. This is an extremely important mechanic of battle relevant in all levels of player. Most taunting units gain this buff for a certain number of turns after they attack, allowing enemy attacks to be diverted from ones allies. Being a buff, there are several ways of dealing with Taunters such as Leto’s Ignore Taunt, which ignores taunt, Maya’s Concentrate Fire that overrides taunt, silencing Taunt before the buff can be obtained, or removing the Taunt buff altogether.

When there are multiple units with taunt active, the top most then front most unit receives taunt priority.

For more depth including Concentrated Fire and other interactions:
https://jinwooooo.github.io/jinwooooo-blog/browndust-understanding-attack-priority/

What are my units stats?

There are a few details to learn about unit stats:

  1. Check your skills descriptions for how which stats affect them.
  2. Support is a percentage. At 100%, a skill that offers 10% bonus attack will grant 10%. But if your support stat is at 150%, then that 10% bonus attack gives 15%!
  3. Law of Critical Hit: Only and All effects that would damage or restore health can crit with the exception of Fixed Damage. -Uero-Ro

What is Agility and Grazing?

You find many units have agility, which is a percentage chance to graze incoming damage. When an attack is grazed, its damage is reduced by 35% and an applying debuffs to you unit has its turn duration halved.

(placeholder text): Some units have skills that interact with their agility. You can increase a merc’s base agility through runes where agility is a rare sub stat. You can also increase agility through support buffs.

What are buffs/debuffs?

Many units inflict buffs on allies or debuffs on enemies. These are effects such as Burn or Stunned that stay on the unit for several turns. The most notable buffs are given by powerful supports that grant bonus damage, defense or even powerful skills such as Taunt or Debuff Immunity. Buffs/Debuffs fall into certain categories, and understanding how certain skills counter others is at the crux of becoming a better player. For a GREAT chart, check out soistheman’s hard work that I haven’t contacted yet to get permission to directly put into this guide!

Stats weakening debuffs lower stats.

Attack Interference debuffs in the game are extremely powerful because they prevent the affected mercenary from attacking foes. Examples include Charm, which causes the enemies to attack themselves (or support enemies if they’re support), and freeze/stun, which both cause the unit to be inoperable during their turn. There is also the skill called Attack Interference Immunity, which does what you think.

Damage over Time (DoT) debuffs such as Poison and Decomposition deal damage every turn. Note that these skills may deal damage differently, and that each turn of damage can crit for bonus damage.

Finally, there are a few specific skills that are important to understand:

  • Nullifier is a skill that removes all buffs from its target. For example a unit that gains the Taunt Buff after attacking, can then be hit with a unit with Nullifier, removing the Taunt. Nullifier does NOT remove passive skills that start at the beginning of combat such as .
  • Many 3 star supports have specific debuff category removal skills. Because different stages in PvE will rely on certain debuffs, using the right 3star support can help you pass certain stages.
  • The most powerful game changing skill is called Debuff Immunity, which absolves the unit from worrying about any debuffs. You will find the most powerful units come with this skill or can Awaken it. Finally, some mercenaries such as Veroniaand Anais have the ability to bestow Debuff Immunity on allies.

Unit Overview

What is Brown Dust’s metagame?

Metagame, or meta for short, the presence of planned and executed strategies in multiplayer game situations. When you use a specific type of rune, update your formation, modify your turn order, you are making decisions in the metagame. The culmination of every player making their own strategic decisions and coming out with a win or loss is what leads to the most popular strategies that define the meta.

In Brown Dust, the specific details of “what’s meta” include what mercenaries to use, what their skill-ups, awakening and runes are, how their formation is arranged and how their turns are ordered. The first strategies to form in any multiplayer environment are popularized with the highest win percentages, and in response, new strategies rise in popularity designed with the purpose to counter the former. This constant chaos and evolution of formations can at times be extremely difficult to predict and even two servers that start at the same time with the same content can develop with very different metas.

Here are a few examples of how the meta has been defined:

  • Lucius is a resilient Defender that can withstand any amount of damage several times due to his Deathguard mechanic. He rises in popularity for being unparalleled as a defender. Multihit attackers such as Foxy rise in popularity for their ability to penetrate multiple Deathguard layers.
  • Velfern does fixed damage in a 3 x 3 tile attack. In response, teams are commonly built to avoid putting too many units next to each other..
  • Lecliss  has a taunt that is automatically active for the first five turns of the starting round. In response, teams use supports and magician charging for the first five turns of their team, to allow their first attack on the sixth turn to begin when that taunt duration expires.

As a final note, because Arena is a consistent source of income for all players, the mercenaries that most players prioritize are PvP focused. As such, Tier Lists and metalists are generally focused on mercenaries that perform well only in PvP. This is not to say that a player should neglect units that are good for other areas. Sabrina, for example, while worthless for Arena is instrumental to scoring well in World Boss.
