Introduction
A feature in Genshin Impact to measure improvements in your character power level is its ability to ascend your heroes past the current maximum level allowable.
Character ascension is important mainly due to the power spike you get from getting a hero ascended due to it going past the current level cap and the big increase in stats you will get.
Additionally, the successful ascension will get your heroes some new talents which can prove useful in your adventure.
Pre-Requirements for Ascension
There are two layers of requirements before you can ascend your character. Adventurer level is one; there are level requirements before you can proceed with ascension.
For example, your first level of ascension usually comes out at around level 15 adventurer level. The next requirement is the level of the hero that you want to ascend. They need to be at least level 20 for level 1 ascension and level 40 for level 2. This will go all the way up to ascension level 6, with the requirements for both adventurer and character level going up at each stage.
Gathering the Materials
A major requirement for these activities is that you’ll need to farm materials that can mostly be obtained in the general world. For example, Kaeya’s first level ascension needs Calla Lily, Shivada Jade Sliver, and Treasure Hoarders Insignia.
You can click on each material to find out where they can be obtained, but essentially you’ll need to find and farm these items first before you can proceed. It is important to note that when you choose to buy from the souvenir shop, you will need sigils to purchase them (which is obtainable just by going through your quests and exploring the world).

These are just some of the required materials for ascending your heroes, but you can essentially plan for them ahead of time just by visiting their character profile page and looking at the attributes tab.
If you click on the material you can see where it can be found.
Ascending
Once you have reached the required level for your character and gathered all the necessary materials, all you need to do is go into that character level up the screen and click on “ascend” (found at the lower right of the screen). Afterward, you will then be prompted with the stat increase and whatever the unlocked skill or talent may be.
Tips to Remember
* Choose your character wisely – Since materials are not abundant in the world, you may want to identify which character you would want to ascend ahead of time. This will also involve a little bit of research if necessary since you will need to 1) identify which characters are well worth the effort to ascend, and 2) what materials do you need to look out for in the world.
* Ascend as soon as you can – This is probably a no-brainer, but doing this at the earliest possible time can drastically improve your chances of going through the game. The stat boost and new unlocked skills that come with ascensions are not a joke, and they are designed to help you progress further on.
* Hunt, Hunt, Hunt – Although it might seem tedious, the game is designed in such a way to encourage people to go around in the world and try to check every nook and cranny. This means you will have to search through the map to find your required materials for ascension. Remember, ascension has six stages (so far), so you will be burning through many materials.
* Play to Have Fun – All in all, it is still just a game, and games are designed to be admired and enjoyed. While searching for your materials or just grinding out your adventurer and character levels, always remember that you should at least be liking what you’re doing. Genshin Impact is a beautiful game, and it was meant to be a source of entertainment and joy.
